Emergency Quick Reference Guide

 

EVACUATION

  • Remain calm.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Walk to a shelter location while also assisting others to do the same – help those that need help.
  • Once outside, stay a safe distance from the building.
  • Do not return to the building until given the “all clear” by the respective first responder entity.
  • Make sure that you check-in with the building coordinator and do not leave the area unless you tell someone.

FIRE

  • Remain calm.
  • Call 911 and report the fire or smoke.
  • Evacuate the building – Do not use elevators.
  • Help others who need assistance.
  • Proceed to a safe and sheltered location.
  • Do not return to the building unless given the “all-clear” by the respective first responder entity.
  • Make sure that you check-in with the building coordinator and do not leave the area unless you tell someone.

 

EARTHQUAKE

  • Remain calm.
  • If you are in the building when the shaking starts, seek shelter in a doorway or under a heavy table or desk.
  • After the shaking stops, evacuate the building.  Do not use elevators and be aware of outside power lines. 
  • Call 911 to report property damage or injuries.
  • Offer help to those that need assistance.
  • Go to a safe location and do not return to the building unless given an “all-clear” by the respective first responder entity.
  • Make sure that you check-in with the building coordinator and do not leave the area unless you tell someone.

 

TORNADO

  • Remain calm.
  • Seek shelter in the lowest level of the building, stay away from windows.
  • Do not use elevators and do not go outside or leave the building.
  • After the tornado has passed, call 911 to report any injuries or property damage.   Help others.
  • If your building sustains damage, after the tornado passes, evacuate to a safe shelter location.  Do not return to the building unless given the “all-clear” by the respective first responder entity.

HOSTILE INTRUDER – ACTIVE SHOOTER

  • Remain calm.
  • If you can safely exit, do so while also helping others that need assistance.
  • Call 911 if possible to report the situation.  
  • If you cannot exit, take cover and barricade the doors behind you
  • If discovered, do what you need to do, consider fighting back, work with others to defeat the intruder.  See the Missouri S&T Active Shooter Video – Run – Hide – Fight.

 

MEDICAL OR OTHER EMERGENCY

  • Remain calm.
  • Call 911 to report the type of incident and the location of incident.
  • For injury and illness, keep the victim still, check breathing and control bleeding

 

CIVIL UNREST

  • Maintain situational awareness through social media and other media including the Univeristy’s website or mass notification system.
  • If you are not in the area of the unrest, do not go to the area.
  • If you are near the area, leave the area as quickly as possible.
  • If you are caught in a crowd, stay neutral, go with the flow and move toward the edge at an angle to safely exit the crowd. 
  • Comply with all law enforcement directions.
  • If you are in a vehicle, lock the doors, roll up the windows and get away before the crowd surrounds it. 
  • If you are the target of the aggression, call 911 for assistance.
